According to Shareaholic Pinterest is now the second-largest social media network after Facebook. You can’t deny how impressive that is because Facebook was born in February 2004 and Pinterest didn’t officially launch their site until March 2010. What that means is that Pinterest is growing as fast as ever but unfortunately a lot of businesses are making mistakes which limit their Pinterest success.

Before you start pinning away there are a few things you need to do so that you’re Pinterest business account is set-up for success.

I have said this several times before, you may have the greatest images or products but if no one can find you on Pinterest then you’ll have to work even harder to make sales and who wants to do that – work smarter, not harder.

Here’s a proven 6 step blueprint to help you build an optimized Pinterest profile for your business. This topic may not be as fun as looking through all the pretty images but completing this this part correctly is an essential part of Pinterest success so grab your healthy glass of water and let’s do this!


1) Profile picture

You’ve all heard the saying that “pictures are worth a thousand words”. You’ve also heard the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”.  Well the truth is it takes just a quick glance, about three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when they meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance.  Because of this; choosing your profile picture is crucial if you want to attract the right audience for your business. Hello!

Branding on Pinterest is important and there are some basic principles you need to consider.

Will you use Pinterest for personal branding or for company branding? The difference is that personal branding is about an individual like Jennifer Lopez and company branding would be like Starbucks for example. Once you’ve decided that you want to make sure that whatever image you use on your profile picture is consistent on all your social networks and marketing materials. Your audience will be able to identify you much quicker when you use the same image consistently.

Whether using a person or a logo, make sure that your photos are sized 160 x 165 pixels. Don’t settle for fuzzy images or the default Pinterest photo such as this below will be placed there and tarnish your image.

Look at the logo below. As you can see the logo is not properly formatted and as a result they are cropping their own business name.  Kind of makes the brand look like it has less than ideal attention to detail.  Is that the message they really want to send?

2) Your Pinterest username

Your username is the name that will be used in the URL of your Pinterest page.

Selecting the correct keywords and thereby applying powerful SEO tactics are critical for getting the high organic search rankings necessary for driving large volumes of traffic to your website. Prospective customers will find you in their searches online by typing keywords into their search bars.  You want your Pinterest page and/ or web page to come up on the first page of the search results.

That is what search engine optimization (SEO) is all about. Using specific keywords is critical for successful social media marketing and they will increase your chances of being found and followed on Pinterest too. Here’s what you need to do to pass the White Glove test:

  • The username that you choose has to include more than just your business name because most people will not search for you on Pinterest by your business or company name. They will more often search for you in a product category. Your username has to include carefully selected keywords.
  • For example if your business name is “ROUGE” and you sell makeup I would suggest you add the word  “makeup” to your username…so it would look like this: www.pinterest.com/rougemakeup(the reason is because you want to have a chance to be found in that product category when people search for makeup.)
  • You may use up to 15 characters

Here’s a great example of Mixed Chicks who incorporated “hair” in their username because it’s a strong category on Pinterest but also because “hair” is their specialty.

The good news is that you can always change your username – for now at least!

3) Profile Name

Your Pinterest profile name is the name which your target audience and customers are familiar with.

  • Use a keyword conscious name to increase your Pinterest SEO.
  • For your name to show up visibly you may use up to 37 characters.

For example Instead of just “Mixed Chicks” they could have easily made it to “Mixed Chicks Hair” to help them with their SEO which would help them get found more often, driving more traffic to their website and increase their odds of making more sales on line. These little things are surprisingly powerful and therefore important.

4) About description

  • Take advantage of this space; you have up to 160 characters.
  • Describe what makes your company special & why someone should follow you or describe what inspires you or your brand.
  • Use keywords in each sentence to increase your Pinterest SEO.

If you go back and look at point #3 above, Mixed Chicks did a poor job because they failed to use a keyword like “hair” or they could have even used the word “beauty”. By using the word hair in their description they would increase their chances of being found on Pinterest when people search for hair related products.

5) The rest of the profile section

  • Add your website URL to make it easy for people to go to your website.
  • Verify your website so you can take advantage of the Pinterest Analytics but this also adds to your company’s legitimacy. Click here to verify your website.

6) Link your social accounts

Another powerful & proven tactic you can take advantage of to ensure you are maximizing your efforts on Pinterest is to share your pins across all your social networks. This not only increases your brand awareness but it will certainly spread the word about what you have to offer.

To link your Pinterest account to your Facebook and Twitter go to your “Account settings” on the top right corner of your Pinterest profile page and move the slider to “Yes” as shown below.

Note: Pinterest will be linked to your Facebook profile page – that means your personal page and NOT your Facebook Page which is for your business. If you are a large company I would not recommend you use this feature. It only makes sense if it’s for a personal brand name.

Optimizing your business profile is the first step you need to take before you start pinning.

Many businesses fail to do this and as a result get less traffic and fewer followers than they had hoped for. Then they wonder why Pinterest “doesn’t work”. That would be like buying a hair dryer, not plugging it in, trying to use it and then thinking the hair dryer doesn’t work. If you don’t set it up right you’ll fail to maximize the results.
